When an extraction is the right call
We always look for ways to save a natural tooth first, like a root canal or a crown. But sometimes severe decay, advanced gum disease, a bad fracture or crowding means a tooth extraction is the healthiest path forward.
When that's the case, Dr. Hyrum or Dr. Joseph Packard will show you what's going on, explain why and talk through what comes next. You decide when you're ready.
What to expect
- A clear explanation first, with your X-ray on the screen
- Thorough numbing, so you feel pressure, not pain
- We check in with you throughout
- Written aftercare instructions to take home
- A plan for what's next, if anything
Healing at home
Some soreness for a few days is normal and usually manageable with over-the-counter or prescribed pain relief. Soft foods, rest and following your aftercare sheet help a lot.
First week tips: skip straws, take it easy on chewing near the spot and call us at (801) 985-3300 if something doesn't feel right. We'd rather hear from you.
Replacing the tooth
Some gaps don't need anything. Others are worth filling so nearby teeth don't drift. Your options include a bridge, partial or full dentures or a dental implant, which our doctors place themselves right here in Roy.
